Today, We held English discussion activity "Express Yourself in English !" which is intended to enjoy small talk "Zatsu-Dan" in English, through listening to, talking about and singing a song in English, which lead by Yuko-san, a Jazz singer.
All of you who participated, thank you.

Today's theme song was "Danny Boy".



"Danny Boy" is a ballad set to an ancient Irish melody. English songwriter Frederic Weatherly wrote the lyrics, which are usually set to the Irish tune of the "Londonderry Air".It is most closely associated with Irish communities.
"Danny Boy" have a message from a parent to a son going off to a war. 

We did group discussion of the questions that Yuko-san prepared for today.

The questions related to "dying for".

Through the discussion, I thought that we did not usually think about  own "death" even we understand that "all person dead someday".

Then, we expressed what want to do before we died like the movie "The Bucket List".

Today's theme song was "Danny Boy".



"Danny Boy" is a ballad which has become the unofficial signature song and anthem of Ireland.
It is very very old song, so very old expression are used in original lyrics.
For exsample, " 'Tis you, 'Tis you " instead of "It's you, It's you", "come ye back" instead of "come you back".

There are various theories for the meaning of "Danny Boy", but no one knows sure the true meaning.
Some of the most common meanings to the lyrics are:
1. A parent sending a son off a war.
2. A parent saying goodbye to a son.
3. A girl saying goodbye to her sweetheart.
4. Young men immigranting and leaving their mother behind in their homeland.

Yuko-san choosed the reaseon number 1, and set 5 questions for pair works. 

The questions are:
 1. Do you want to become a soldier?
 2. What would you say if someone close to you would go to a war?
 3. Do you know any country where military service is currently compulsory?
 4. What things would you like to send your partner who has been sent to fight in a war?
 5. What do you think soldiers away from home miss the most?

After pair works, we talked about the question which set by Yuko-san.
The question is:

"Imagine your loved one had to leave you against his/her will.
 But you believe that he/she will come back to you someday.
 How long would you wait? Hos do you deal with it?"

毎月金曜日に開催しています英語でディスカッションするクラブ活動、「Express Yourself in English !」

「Express Yourself in English !」は、「英語でしゃべる」
からさらに一歩進んで、「英語を使って会話する」ことを体得できるクラブ活動です。
ひとつのテーマについて話す「ディスカッションスタイル」の会話は、英語でスモールトークをする時にとても役立つ会話法です。
当クラブ活動では、ジャズやフォークのスタンダードナンバーをテーマとして使いながら、テーマの歌の歌詞をヒアリングで聞き取り、発音に気をつけて実際に歌い、その歌にまつわるパラグラフをもとに実際に英語で会話を行うことを通じて、「ディスカッションのノウハウ」をジャズシンガーの古山 祐子さんに教えていただきます。
ディスカッションできるスキルは、英語を使った会話においてはもちろん、日本語を使った会話のスキルアップにつながると実感できる、会話力アップにお薦めのアクティヴィティです。

本日、5月8日（金）に開催します。

今回のテーマソングは「Danny Boy」です。
ジャズのスタンダードナンバーにもなっている、スコットランド民謡です。
