Today, We held English discussion activity "Express Yourself in English !", heard, talked about and sang a song in English, which lead by Yuko-san, a Jazz singer.
All of you who participated, thank you.
Today's theme song was "Edelweiss".
Yuko-san advised us,
When we sing Edelweiss in English, "w" will sing by pronunciation of "v" in a German type.
"Edelweiss" is a show tune from the 1959 musical "The Sound of Music".
It's not an Austrian folk song nor even the official national anthem.
"Edelweiss" is as a national flowers of Austria (and Switzerland).
The musical script provides the metaphor of the edelweiss as a symbol of the Austria that Captain von Trapp, Maria, and their children knew would live on in their hearts despite the Nazi's invation.
That is expressed very much by the last lyrics.
By today's pair work, we asked each other using the questions that Yuko-san prepared for about "The Sound of Music" story.
However, by the question 3, the discussion turned in an unexpected topic.
That question was:
"What would you do if you were the Captain von Trapp, or Maria ?"
My pair-work partner did not know the story of "The Sound of Music" very much.
So I explained to her ;
・von Trapp being very older than Maria
・von Trapp had seven children between the former wife whom he lost
・von Trapp was a Austrian naval heroes and so he was rich person
・Maria and von Trapp and children decided to leave their mother country by the invasion of the Nazi
Then, Her answer was, "If I were Maria, I could not get married"!
Then Yuko-san asked all the members "If you were Maria, could you marry von Trapp?".
As almost all participants were ladies, this question became lively.
How about you ?
Could you marry von Trapp ?
